The 18th International Oenological Competition “Emozioni dal Mondo Merlot e Cabernet Insieme” focused on music and emotions.
Emotions and senses always represented one of the peculiarities and founding elements of the International Oenological Competition which was born in Bergamo 18 years ago from the idea of the oenologist Sergio Cantoni. The name of the event itself, “Emozioni dal Mondo” highlights this feature that was revolutionary at the beginning of the 2000s, when the event was born, and is still very up-to-date, as underlined in the symposium “From Sensory Analysis to Neurosciences” held on the last day of the Competition and focused on the importance and possibilities of scientifically evaluate the emotions linked to taste.
Emozioni dal Mondo 2022 emphasized the emotional aspect of tasting even more than usual.
70 international judges (both technicians and journalists) arrived in Bergamo from 24 nations all around the world, and tasted 219 samples produced in 21 countries in the evocative space of the cellars of Villa Martinelli in Mapello.
With the technical support of Centro Studi Assaggiatori Brescia, a team from the University of Pisa and its CNR, the judges tasted with equipment for the detection and measurement of factors such as the electrocardiogram, to collect accurate information on the state of stress or relaxation; the galvanic response of the skin (GSR) index of sympathetic activation and the electroencephalographic signal.
Furthermore the judges' judgments were collected electronically through tablets. This allowed rapid and detailed statistical processing of the rates.
Not only technology and science, though, emotions also had a relevant role. The tastings took place with a background music playlist selected by the Consorzio Tutela Valcalepio as a result of a series of activities related to wine-music pairing brought about in the last 3 years.
The final results of the tastings highlighted how music could really have a role in setting the mood of the tasters.
Following the regulations of OIV (Organization International de la Vigne et du Vin), the international body that oversees international wine competitions, only 30% of the enrolled samples can be awarded.
The results were exceptional: 10 Grand Gold Medals awarded (the minimum score to obtain a Grand Gold Medal is 92/100), 56 Gold Medals (by regulation awarded to wines that get at least 85 / 100 but, given the regulation, obtained from wines with scores higher than 87/100) and 20 the "Roberto Vitali" press prize assigned to the wine that, for each nation, obtained the highest score from the jury of journalists (at least 85/100).
The list of awarded wines is definitely an international one.
Italy, which was the first nation as far as the number of samples enrolled in the competition with 121 wines, got 5 Grand Gold Medals and 27 gold medals.
Serbia, which was the second nation as far as the number of samples enrolled in the competition with 37 wines, got 2 Grand Gold Medals and 16 Gold Medals.
Also, Croatia, Australia, France, Hungary, Germany, Slovakia, Malta, Romania, and North Macedonia got medals.
As for the Italian medals, awarded to wines from every part of Italy, from Veneto to Tuscany, from Lombardy to Sicily, from Trentino to Friuli Venezia Giulia to Calabria, two wine-growing areas stand out: the Valcalepio and the Colli Euganei.
Valcalepio obtained 1 Grand Gold Medal, 4 Gold Medals, and the Italian Press Prize.
Colli Euganei gained 2 Great Gold Medals, including the Italian wine with the highest score in the competition (the Colli Euganei Riserva DOC Notte di Gallileo 2019 produced by Colli Euganei S.C.A. Winery), and 3 Gold Medals.
Emozioni dal Mondo confirms once again its international relevance. Nonetheless, the event is deeply rooted in the hosting territory: the tasting and the Gala dinner of Emozioni dal Mondo 2022 took place in the spaces of Villa Martinelli. During the event, the international guests visited Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII, the abbey of St. Egidio in Fontanella, the Romanic church of St. Nicola in Almenno San Bartolomeo, and the Abbey of Pontida. The symposium "From Sensory Analysis to Neuroscience" took place Saturday morning at the Sala Mosaico of the Bergamo Chamber of Commerce.

Here are Emozioni dal Mondo 2023 dates: 12th, 13th, and 14th October 2023.
The oenologist Sergio Cantoni, director of the International Competition « Emozioni dal Mondo Merlot e Cabernet Insieme» opened the Welcome dinner last 14th October with this line: « Imagine Emozioni dal Mondo as a crossroad. A place where people, nationalities, expertise, and wines meet». Emozioni dal Mondo is the only International Wine Competition for Merlot and Cabernet officially recognized worldwide by OIV.
Once again Emozioni dal Mondo, once again Bergamo.
The international judges (both oenologists and journalists) arrived in Bergamo from 22 countries. They all said that this competition is a fundamental yearly appointment in their international calendar. It represents a moment to meet old and new friends, a chance to be back to Bergamo and to discover something new and unexpected.
This confirms the quality of the formula chosen in 2004. Emozioni dal Mondo, in fact, has a three-day schedule that mixes the official tasting to touristic and cultural visits and tours. 2021 in Bergamo was the year that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the artist Gianbattista Moroni's birth. Emozioni dal Mondo created a program with two guided tours in Bergamo city center focusing on artistic beauties, for example, some altarpieces by Lorenzo Lotto or Palazzo Moroni in the Upper part of the historic city center).
Emozioni dal Mondo always gives some space to the local wine production in its program. In 2021 Consorzio Tutela Valcalepio organized a special workshop focusing on organic d.o Wines produced in Bergamo. Valcalepio Focus Bio took place in the charming garden of Villa Primavera in Scanzorosciate (a former property of Bartolomeo Colleoni himself). 5 wineries took part to the event with their organic wines: Cantina Sociale Bergamasca, Il Cipresso, Le Sorgenti, Oikos, and Tosca. It was a valuable chance for the international judges to meet the producers and exchange opinions while tasting their organic wines.
The location selected for Emozioni dal Mondo 2021 was a charming one, Castello degli Angeli in Carobbio degli Angeli. The ex-monastery hosted both the official tasting of the competition and the gala dinner.
What is not new to Emozioni dal Mondo is its internationality. Both judges and samples came to Bergamo from different countries, confirming the high international relevance of this competition. 18 Countries sent samples to Vignaioli Bergamaschi headquarters to enroll them in Emozioni dal Mondo 2021. Among the others, France, Australia, Serbia, and North Macedonia (which got a medal at its very first participation). Medals confirm the internationality of the samples: 66 Gold Medals were awarded by the technical juries. 15 wines received the Roberto Vitali Press Prize from the journalists.

International Oenological Competition “Emozioni dal Mondo Merlot e Cabernet Insieme” 2020 has been really extraordinary. The event “made in Bergamo and loved in the world", as stated in the Instagram bio (@emozionidalmondowines), got to its 16th edition. This year’s main aim was to be there, affirms oenologist Sergio Cantoni, director of the event.
“This year more than ever, we really didn’t wanna stop. It’s been a tough spring in Bergamo, and the health situation worldwide is still uncertain. But we really wanted to organize the competition this year to show to the world that, despite everything Bergamo #molamia (namely Bergamo doesn’t give up, that was the official hashtag of Bergamo lockdown during Spring 2020).
We did our best to organize a professional competition that was also safe from a sanitary point of view and, most importantly, emotional and engaging.
We were in the middle of lots of discussions about what to do and how to really realize Emozioni dal Mondo but then, out of the blue, the first samples arrived. They were sent directly from Australia. That was a turning point! I mean, if someone from the other side of the globe believed in us so much, we definitely couldn’t let them down. And here we are!”.
Obviously, this was a “limited” edition due to safety reasons and to the actual difficulties in getting both wines and judges in Bergamo. 154 samples got to Bergamo from 12 Countries all around the world (Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia).
They were tasted by 40 international judges from 13 Countries (Colombia, Japan, Italy, Moldova, Polony, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, and the USA), divided into 5 committees.
The official tastings took place in the charming atmosphere of Castello degli Angeli in Carobbio degli Angeli (BG) that hosted the gala dinner too.
Wine service was up to the Hospitality Training Institute of San Pellegrino Terme (BG) under the supervision of AIS Bergamo Sommeliers.
Another confirmed partnership was that with Centro Assaggiatori Brescia that took charge of the scientific management of the Competition and the statistics elaboration of the results.
An elaboration that brought to the assignment of 2 Great Gold Medals and 45 Gold Medals, as stated by OIV Regulation.
Emozioni dal Mondo 2020 wanted to focus on Bergamo and decided to do it by concentrating the extra-tasting visits to the city. The international judges were hosted in Best Western Hotel Cappello d’Oro, in the heart of the city center. The program consisted of two touristic tours: the first explored the Lower Part of Bergamo, the second the Upper Part of Bergamo.
An extra-ordinary edition full of new rules: temperature checks, social distancing, mandatory use of masks in all the group situations, brand new and especially hygienized glasses for the tasting, many sanitary procedures during the wine service and outdoor tours. Nonetheless, Emozioni dal Mondo 2020 kept its main emotional message untouched.
Because, despite everything, Emotions do not stop!
It's official: Emozioni Dal Mondo 2020 is confirmed. The International Oenological Competition will take place on the 15th, 16th, and 17th October 2020.
There were rumors about it but the official newsletter published yesterday officially confirmed the news. "We are still worried about the International situation", said Sergio Cantoni, director of the Competition, "but we want to be positive. Emozioni dal Mondo is a very important appointment and we're doing our best to organize it for the 16th time consequently".
Behind the scene, the organization is working hard in order to create a competition that is both professional and safe from a sanitary point of view.
In the next weeks, the official procedures are going to be published. The organizing committee is working to guarantee sanitary safety for both organization staff and tasters.
In the meantime, the enrollment of the samples for Emozioni dal Mondo 2020 is officially open. The papers and enrollment materials are available on the Enrollment section of this website.
